Q & A with Brigitte
There are many elementary schools in the area. What makes
Bertschi unique?
I think every school develops a culture and sense of identity based on
both its academic program and the makeup of the school community. For
Bertschi, this sense of "who we are" is reflected in two significant
ways. First is our extraordinary curriculum. Bertschi’s faculty has developed
an integrated, multi-disciplinary program that combines academic rigor
and artistic creativity. Visitors see this immediately in the artwork
and projects displayed throughout the school.
Bertschi
is also distinguished by its uncompromised commitment to diversity. Diversity
at Bertschi is a much larger and more inclusive concept than traditionally
thought. Our students bring a variety of life experiences and learning
styles to the classroom. Our teachers draw from a wide spectrum of professional
skills and personal interests. Our educational program explores topics
within a range of cultural and geographic perspectives, reflecting the
global community in which students live. There is a true richness at
Bertschi at many levels. I believe this is what makes the school unique.
If asked to describe a student graduating from Bertschi in three words,
what would they be?
Compassionate. Confident. Creative. Children leaving Bertschi have developed
independence in their learning and in their thinking. They solve problems
creatively and communicate their ideas clearly. A solid foundation of
academic skills prepares them for a successful middle school experience,
and they know that. Above all, they appreciate and respect social and
cultural differences and have a strong sense of personal responsibility.
Bertschi students have learned how to be active, caring contributors
to their community. This all comes together in what we call "the Bertschi
way."
What final thought would you share with parents as they explore Bertschi
for their child?
One of the wonderful things about Seattle is that there are so many options
for parents in choosing a school. I think the most important thing is
to know your own child. Look for an environment in which he or she will
thrive not just academically but socially and emotionally as well. And
it must be a community of which you as parents can feel a part. Education
at Bertschi is a partnership between parents, faculty, administrators
and even the larger community. The school should feel right for the entire
family.
